What is USDOT?

The USDOT (United States Department of Transportation) is a federal Cabinet department of the U.S. government that deals with transportation.
A USDOT number is a unique identifier assigned by FMCSA – (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) to companies engaged in transporting passengers or hauling interstate cargo in the United States.
With USDOT, the government authorities keep track of a commercial company’s safety records such as registration status, safety compliance, review ratings, inspections, accident investigations, and more.

Who needs USDOT?

USDOT is mandated if:

  • Commercial carriers are handling Hazardous material, and they require a safety permit (USDOT number) for interstate commerce
  • The gross weight of 4536 (10,001 pounds) or more
  • Carry more than 15 passengers (including drivers) and is not used to transport passenger’s compensation.
  • Carriers transport more than eight passengers for compensation and are involved in Interstate Commerce.
  • In general, Carrier companies operating commercial vehicles, hauling cargo, or transporting passengers across state lines should report and register themselves with the FMCSA, carry a USDOT number, and follow the Federal Regulations.
